What "MailDor and Mailer" are all about
----------------------------------------------------------------------
After finding a need to keep track of the addresses of my BBS users,
and since PCBoard doesn't already keep track of full mailing address
information, I wrote MailDor to handle this problem. Then I wanted
a way to print off mailing labels fast and easily - then the Mailer
program was developed to interface with MailDor.
MailDor is a BBS door that allows sysops to collect names and
address information of users. Then, sysops can use the Mailer
program to edit, or delete records in the database, or print mailing
labels from the database.
The Mailer program can also be run completely on its own - it has
functions to add new records, and do simple find functions in the
database - if you are looking for a quick way to print mailing
labels, the Mailer program is probably the quickest around.
You don't need to be a sysop of a BBS to use the Mailer program,
only the MailDor part is BBS specific.
Setting up the MAILER DOS program
----------------------------------------------------------------------
All you need to do is put the MAILER program in a directory where
you will be accessing it from. Then type in "MAILER" and press
ENTER. The program will create its database and index files, and
you can then start to add names and addresses into the database. If
you are a BBS sysop and have been running the MAILDOR program, you
can put the MAILER program in the same directory as the MAILDOR
program and use the same database that has been created with
MAILDOR.
Using MAILER
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Using the MAILER program should be fairly straightforward for most
people. It uses simple menus, and has on screen help in most of its
areas. To move the highlight bar to different menu options, simply
press the up and down arrow keys. Press ENTER when the highlight
bar is over the option you wish to do.
Adding Addresses:
----------------
If you are using MAILER (or MAILDOR) for the first time, select the
"Add address" option from the menu. A "help" window will pop open
giving you a list of commands available, followed by an address
entry form window. To add an address, simple type it in, and press
ENTER after each field, or line of input.
When you are finished, press CONTROL-ENTER to save your information.
Pressing ESCape will abort your entry.
If you enter a name that is already in the database, you will get a
warning message that states that the address is already in the
database, and if you want to continue or not. Duplicate records are
allowed in the database, but most people don't have different
addresses at the same time, and it wouldn't make sense to have the
same address listed for the same person twice.
Browsing/Editing Addresses:
--------------------------
Select the "Browse addresses" option if you wish to view each
address in the database, find a particular address or print a
particular address. As with the "adding" option, a help window will
pop up, followed by the entry window.
Use the page up and page down keys to cycle through the addresses in
the database - note that addresses are stored alphabetically!
As indicated in the help window, you can press Control-P to print
an address label, or Control-E to edit the address. If you select
the edit option, the commands to edit the address are the same as when
adding an address.
If you need to find a particular address, you will need to know the
name of the person's address you are looking for. Press Control-F
to pop up a window that asks you for the name you are looking for.
Type the persons name (capitals are not important) and press ENTER.
If the record is found, you will be displayed the first match of the
name you typed in.
For example, if there are records in the database such as:
Jack Doe,
Jane Doe,
John Doe,
And you enter "John" as the record to find, you will be taken to
John Doe's address. However, if you type "J" instead of "John"
for the search string, you will be taken to Jack Doe's record.
Type "Ja" for the search string and you will still be taken to Jack
Doe's record. Type "Jan" and you will be displayed Jane Doe's
record.
The best thing to do is to experiment with the find function and get
an idea as to how it operates, or simply use the full and correct
name of who you are trying to find.
When finished printing, browsing, editing, press ESCape to return to
the main menu.
Print Addresses:
---------------
This option will print out a mailing list of ALL addresses in the
database. If you are printing out Christmas cards, or something
else similar, you will find this option handy. If all you want to
do is print a few specific addresses, you will need to use the
Browse option and print the ones you want.
Re-index Data:
-------------
Sometimes the index files in database routines become garbled, or
occasionally require updating. If, when using the MAILER program
things act strangely, and you find addresses that are missing from
the database, but should be in there, re-index the data.
List Names:
----------
This option displays a very simple list of names in the database. A
full screen window will pop open and list names, cities and states
(or province). This can be handy if you need a quick overview of
who is in your database and who isn't.
Setting up the MAILDOR BBS door program
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This part of the program is for BBS sysops only - if you are not the
sysop of a BBS, this part of the program will be of no use to you.
Sysops that want to set this part of the program up as a door,
should refer to the SYSOP.DOC file for instructions.
Warranty & Guarantee's
----------------------------------------------------------------------
MAILER is in no way warranted to be free of defects, bugs, etc. It
has, however, gone through extensive testing on several of my
computers, and I have not seen any adverse effects. I am not
responsible for any adverse effects it has on your system (just in
case). You should take any steps to avoid virus infection and scan
the file for viruses before using it on your system.
Upgrades/Improvements
----------------------------------------------------------------------
MAILDOR and MAILER will be upgraded as we get new ideas for the
programs, or as bugs are found (hopefully there aren't any). The
latest versions of these programs and other programs written by the
author of MailDor and Mailer can be found on our support BBS -
please call (519) 357-1943 to access our system.
Registered users of MDOR will be notified by mail when new versions
are available. New versions can be downloaded free of charge from
our support BBS, or for $5.00, you will be sent an upgraded version.
When you register
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On receipt of your registration fee, we will mail you the necessary
information that allows you to update your MAILER and MAILDOR
program to indicate who the product is registered to. Complete
instructions will be given, so even the novice computer user should
be able to upgrade the program to a "registered" status.
